Which industries are participating in the trial?

Three Industry Skills Councils have volunteered to participate in the trial program (Agri-Food Skills Council of Australia, Manufacturing Skills Council, and Transport and Logistics Skills Council). To view the qualification for each of these industries, go to the Links page.

Which states and territories are participating in the trial?

Each state and territory is represented in the trial covering a range of target groups. For a list of trial sites and target groups, go to the Links page.

Is it an endorsed qualification?

For the purposes of the trial, a Certificate I in Agri-Food (Pathways), a Certificate I in Manufacturing (Pathways) and a Certificate I in Transport and Logistics (Pathways) qualification have been conditionally endorsed for one year. This means that learners who are successful will receive a Certificate I qualification in the relevant industry area. Learners will receive credit for all the units of competency which may include at least two from an existing AQF 1 or 2 qualification.

Who is on the reference committee?

The Certificate I in Industry (Pathways) has been developed in conjunction with the three involved Industry Skills Councils and after consultations with a range of national employer, union and government stakeholders. For a full list of reference group participants, contact ratio.

What are the requirements of the Certificate I in Industry (Pathways)?

Competency in 7-9 competency units must be achieved for the qualification.

indent bullet 1 Core Technical Task unit which is based on a work project or activity

indent bullet 2 Core Pathway units; these incorporate the employability skills

indent bullet 2 Elective (Technical) units from the relevant industry Training Package

indent bullet 1-3 Units from any nationally endorsed Training Package at AQF

How is it different to previous Certificate I qualifications?

This qualification is built around work or work-like projects which provide a way for learners to develop employability and technical skills. According to the BCA/ACCI Report for DEST, Employability Skills for the Future (May 2002) Employability skills are “skills required not only to gain employment, but also to progress within an enterprise so as to achieve one’s potential and contribute successfully to enterprise strategic directions”. How is it different to pre-vocational courses?

The major difference is that the Certificate I in Industry (Pathways) is a nationally recognised qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). That means that it is recognised by all Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) across Australia.

Who will the qualification benefit?

It benefits school students as well as those who have had difficulty accessing VET or employment. For example, it can assist:

indent bullet Those who have had difficulty accessing apprenticeships or traineeships.
